My project is about raising awareness of sound pollution being made by man and how it can affect both humans and the natural wildlife of the environments we as humans invade on a daily basis.

Project Aim:

Is to investigate how man made noise pollution in the ocean is having an effect on underwater mammals and using this information to highlight how it sounds from the perspective of the underwater mammals. A long with this showing the speed of sound as it travels through different mediums and the differences in hearing ranges.

Rational

The research content is going to be based around natural documentaries such as Frozen Planet, Life and Predators (The Dangerous Sea) and using quotes from the narrators which will help me get a better understanding of underwater mammals living environments. A long with some detail on the movement and migration paths of some mammals involved in my projects that will indicate sound they may hear.
Also within my project I will be looking at the effects of manmade noise pollution to underwater mammals, I will also be looking at the speeds that sound travels through different mediums. As sound travels at different speed through different temperatures and as the ocean gets colder the further down the sound will travel slower. I will get most of this information from reading book such as Our Underwater World, which will give me information on water temperatures at the different sea levels.
The Internet will play a big part when searching for information as with the use of the Internet I can look through thousands of information on noise pollution and find out all the different hearing ranges for the underwater mammals involved in my project. Getting all the best of information from any journals, books and newspapers allowing me to find a better source of information.
The main reason I have chosen this particular subject is that it will challenge me to use all my skills to the best of my ability and get the best possible results for my final production. I feel my project aim and objectives are very interesting. My chose of doing a project on noise pollution is different from a normal sound proofing or track remixing project as it gives the listener a different outlook on what is happening in the world in terms of sound pollution over a wide range of environments.

Progress thus far

So far I have define my project down to one element of a soundscape which will be heard from the whales perspective, Which I have been looking at as well as reviewing underwater documentaries like The Blue Planet, Predators The Dangerous Sea, Life and Frozen Planet a long with animations Such as Finding Nemo and Sharks Tail. I am hoping that it will give me a better understanding and the knowledge needed to recreate my very own underwater soundscape.

I have also being listening to sound in and around were I live and work to see if they can be used and edited to make them sound like any of the wonderful soundscape that comes from under sea level.

I have a few ideas such as:

Creaking door frames =                   Shipping vessel
Heavy Breath =                               Whales Blowhole
Movement in the bath =                   Whales breaching the ocean surface
Water vendor =                                Air Bubbles underwater

This is just a short list of things that I may help me to create my soundscape for my final project.

The most important thing I have done thus far is emailed deep sea world and as to interview one of there divers and if it is possible get the chance to either dive myself and record sounds or get one of their divers to record for me, but sadly I have had to reply up to this point.

Problems I am having

·       Finding recording equipment that records at 120-196khz
·       The use of a Hydrophone
·       Having any contact with professionals in this field
·       Finding the right environment to record underwater
·       The ability to write documentation in the proper style
·       Time

Main Goals

My main goals for my next supervisor meeting is to have some of the items below completed:
·       Full evaluation of underwater soundscape examples
·       Practice recording and editing skills
·       Have interview questions finalised and ready to used
·       Done some underwater listening
·       Made contact with relevant personal
